Kiwi Fruit Chutney

I don't usually make chutney. Actually I've never made chutney but I guess there is a first time for everything. When Debbie posted this recipe over on the forums at C&Z it seemed like a good time to begin my chutney making experiences. The stove top was getting a little jealous of all the attention the new oven has had this week. This morning I decided to lavish a little attention on the stove top. Now we have two jars of chutney in the pantry. I suspect one jar will be going to a certain person as part of my New Zealand Blog by Post package.
KIWI FRUIT CHUTNEY (From Debbie)
6 kiwi fruit peeled and diced
2 large onions peeled and diced
1 clove garlic minced
250grams sultanas
1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger and 10 cloves
salt and pepper to taste
250 ml malt vinegar
1 cup dark brown sugar
Saute onion and garlic in a little oil until translucent but not browned.
Add kiwi fruit, sultanas, spices.
Cook until slightly softened but not mushy
Add sugar and vinegar and mix well.
Simmer until sultanas plump and soft and kiwi fruit starting to lose shape (about35 minutes).
The vinegar should reduce to almost nothing and you will be left with a moist chutney.
Serve with meats or hard cheeses and bread.
my mom usually makes a chutney with green mangoes and raisins, it is very good with a nice steak.

I always enjoy that first time for everything.
Seems very successful.

that looks like it's a delicious chutney. Have not ever seen a kiwifruit chutney recipe so will be keeping this for future use.

I haven't ever tried this type of chutney. My Mom makes mango chutney and it's absolutely delishious! This looks delish as well.

Kat amd Ml - Mango chutney sounds like it would be nice too. Mangoes are so expensive here I never buy them.
Tanna - and then it turns out to be so easy you wonder why you never tried it before.
Chris - I had some for lunch today with bread and cheese. Excellent.

Oooooo! It will be a lucky person who receives a jar of this! I haven't had kiwi chutney, but mum always makes feijoa chutney.

Thanks so much for this post. I have never been a great fan of kiwifruit - and have often wondered what to do with them, other than sliced with a pav! This looks great! I love chutney with cheeses and have copied your recipe to my favorites.

Arfi - We are really enjoying your tamarillo chutney.
Emma - I think they will like it ;)
Tim - it's great with cheese. I had some last night on a chickpea salad, great.
