A Taste Of Yellow - Pears

Dsc_0004

My friend Jacqui thought I might like to meet her friend Gilly because guess what....Gilly has a food blog too. Drop by and say hi to Gilly at So So Simple Food.  Gilly had brought a few figs along as a foodie gift.  Sadly she remembered the figs as her husband drove down the road with the figs still in the car.

However Jacqui had been up at her beach house  and gathered a few feijoas  from her tree for me.  Feijoa on its own is a bit boring and I had some pears which needed eating today.  You can see their skins are a perfect yellow which means sweet and juicy inside.  I googled feijoa cake, because that was my first thought for the feijoas, and up came my blogging friend in Ireland Caroline at Bibliocook  with a feijoa and apple crumble. Perfect I could use the pears in place of the apples and kill two birds with one stone, or should that be cook two fruits with one recipe. Run on over  to Caroline's   for the recipe.

Oh fantastic! I haven't tried this combination before, we often have feijoa and apple together too. Can't wait to try pear though, perhaps on the weekend, I may even make it for Sunday brunch!

It is truly a small world! I've been a fan of Gilly's for a while now, so it was extra nice to see the shout out to her. And the crumble looks delicious too! : )

Feijoa? I've never heard of it, I'm off to google it.

Feijoas are one - just one - of the many things that I miss from New Zealand. Sadly, there's absolutly nothing like them in Ireland although I am tempted to try and source a tree to plant in our burgeoning orchard behind the cottage! I've made a version of this crumble using kiwi fruit and apples as well. Very good and a real surprise to people who had never eaten a cooked kiwi fruit.

PS I love your photo Barbara!

This dish looks delicious, the perfect combination of sweet fruity softeness and bready texture. Yum!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Beccy you will see from Caroline's comment they are not available in Ireland. They grow wild in everyone's back or front yard in NZ!

I had to look up Feijoa, I don't think we get them in the UK, but the crumble looks delicious.

Mmm...I love feijoas, they are my absolutely favourite fruit! Luckily I have access to a huge orchard of them!

Feijoa and apple crumbles are another favourite of mine. I have a recipe for a feijoa cake at home if you would like it, just drop me an email.

Barbara, Crumbles...one of the ultimate comfort foods. I like the addition of oats for that nutty texture and taste. My mother made it with rhubarb and apples another wonderful combo.

very delicious-looking. I want a bite of the pears right now. they look so good.

paz

It looks terribly good!! The pears on the picture look so juicy and the dessert... I have to try it.

Chris feijoas are everywhere in nZ.

First time I heard about Feijoas from my husband's friend who moved in to New Zealand.

Pepy - I don't often eat them raw and I should.

Barbara Darling..can I believe this! have just come in from the garden ~ 'n there was the first feijoa of the season on the grass!!! As I looked at it I thought..now what to do with them...merci for the solution:-)
