My two pieces of Andrew van der Putten pottery. The one at the back I bought before he became a well known New Zealand potter. The bowl at the front was a gift from a friend. I have seen his work on display in the Auckland Museum.
A funny story about the one at the back. At one point I displayed it on the floor in a corner of our living room. It is about the size of a soccer ball. A musician friend visiting for lunch, walked across to it as he was leaving, brought his leg back and kicked it across the room. The moment he brought his foot up, his wife, Bryan and I froze knowing he would have connected with it before our screams had time to leave our gaping mouths. We watched, transfixed, as it flew across the room, coming to a stop against the wall on the far side.
"Wayne" his wife screamed, WTF are you doing. Yes, those are the words she used..... and I thought.
Without his glasses he thought it was one of the children's rubber balls. Not a crack, not a scratch, not a chip. Wayne and his wife are no longer in our lives, but I think of Wayne every time I look at it.
